Doug Adams

The Cythera series is based on the painting "Pilgrimage to the island of Cythera" by Jean-Antoine Watteau. In the painting, a statue of Venus overlooks elegantly dressed couples in various stages of courtship in an evocative outdoor setting. The mysterious atmosphere, the dynamics of the couples and what lay beneath their gaze and their conversations intrigued me. Specific colours found in the painting as well as the colours of certain fabric samples influenced my colour palette. With these influences, I sought to express sensuousness, desire and enticement.
